Refuge Ceremony and Medicine Buddha Empowerment Free Thursday Commuter Option

With His Eminence the 7th Kyabje Yongzin Ling Rinpoche and Robert A.F. Thurman

April 18 - 19, 2024

  • Commuter (no meals) – $0.00

It is with great joy and honor that we announce that His Eminence the 7th Kyabje Yongzin Ling Rinpoche has kindly accepted our invitation to teach at Menla during this North American 2024 tour! It is fitting that for his first visit to Menla “the Medicine Buddha” Retreat Center, Rinpoche will bless us with teachings and empowerments on the Medicine Buddha. During Kyabje Rinpoche’s historic visit to Menla, he will confer the Three Jewel Refuge ceremony and teaching, doorway to all Buddhist practices, a great blessing welcoming to everyone, Buddhist or not, and will also confer the initiation to the Medicine Buddha mandala, considered essential for any kind of healing practice.

H.E. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche was born in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala, in 1985. In 1987, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama recognized him as the reincarnation of His Holiness the 6th Kyabje Yongzin Ling Rinpoche (1903–1983), who was the principal tutor of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. His Holiness refers to him as “my Root Guru” and expressed his gratitude to his Guru in the foreword to his full length biography of Kyabje Ling Rinpoche.

Kyabje Ling Rinpoche was a root guru of Tenzin Bob Thurman‘s as well, from exactly 60 years ago. He ordained Bob as a novice monk at that time, years later initiating his forgiven layperson into the Guhyasamaāja and Yamāntaka Tantras. The new Kyabje Ling Rinpoche will be conferring the precious refuge ceremony and the Medicine Buddha initiation. He once incidentally proved to Dr. Thurman his continuity with his previous incarnation, when, at the age of 3 years, he remembered key things about their past interactions which he could not possibly have known from others.

H.E. the 7th Ling Rinpoche has completed all five Geshe Studies subjects—Logic, Perfection of Wisdom, Middle Way Insight, Higher Science, and Monastic Discipline—and was awarded his Geshe Degree from Drepung Loseling Monastic University in South India, in November 2016. H.E. 7th Ling Rinpoche has also recently completed a year of further studies at Gyuto Tantric College in Dharamsala. His Holiness the Dalai Lama continues to closely guide him.

Please don’t miss this rare opportunity to connect with this extraordinary Lama!

For this retreat, Menla is waiving its normal commuter fee and offering free attendance to HE Ling Rinpoche’s initiation and teachings on Thursday April 18. While Menla is not collecting dana/tuition for Ling Rinpoche from those registering for one-day commuter attendance, we encourage commuters to make whatever offering they can afford directly to Rinpoche in an envelope at the conclusion of the initiation, along with a ceremonial kata/scarf, in accordance with the Tibetan tradition.

Full retreat options with over night stays are available. Please use this link to register!

Please note that meals will not be offered to one-day commuters at Menla as we are booked to capacity. Commuters can take lunch at any number of restaurants in and around Phoenicia during the 2 hour break between 12-2pm.
